Ric­cia­rdo knew he was go­ing to be start­ing at the back, and that in­evitably meant qual­i­fy­ing wasn’t a pri­or­ity, al­though he did out­pace Ver­stap­pen in Q1. He made good progress in the race be­fore he re­tired, climb­ing to 11th when he stopped with what was claimed to be a clutch fail­ure. Since Canada, Ver­stap­pen has shown few signs of the ca­pac­ity for mis­ad­ven­ture that ru­ined his first part of the sea­son. But at Monza, where he was close to beat­ing Bot­tas, he re­verted to his old ten­dency to move twice in the brak­ing zones and earned a penalty that cost two places.
