THE MP4/4 DE­SIGN TEAM

The MP4/4 was the prod­uct of a re­mark­able team over a very short time – seven months from the be­gin­ning of the de­sign process un­til the car first ran at Imola. The key se­nior mem­bers of the de­sign team were:

• Steve Ni­chols Chief de­signer re­spon­si­ble for turbo cars for 1987 and ’88, who con­trolled the con­cept and de­sign of the MP4/3 and MP4/4.

• David North De­sign en­gi­neer re­spon­si­ble for the de­tail de­sign of the gear­box and in­ter­nals, and rear-sus­pen­sion ge­om­e­try.

• Matthew Jef­freys De­sign en­gi­neer re­spon­si­ble for the de­tail de­sign of the mono­coque for­ward of the rear bulk­head, front sus­pen­sion, nose-box and driver in­stal­la­tions.

• Hugh Moran De­sign en­gi­neer re­spon­si­ble for the de­tail de­sign

of the cock­pit ‘bath­tub’, gear link­age and turbo in­let ducts.

• David Neil­son De­sign en­gi­neer re­spon­si­ble for the de­tail de­sign of the rear sus­pen­sion.

• Mike Lock De­sign draughts­man re­spon­si­ble for the de­tail de­sign of the ra­di­a­tor in­let ducts and chas­sis tool­ing.

• Colin Smith De­sign draughts­man re­spon­si­ble for the body­work.

• Bob Bell En­gi­neer re­spon­si­ble for aero­dy­namic development.
