rae Comparative report

Two brief flights at between 1000ft and 2000ft were carried out between the Fw 190 and the prototype Griffon Spitfire flown by an experienced test pilot from Messrs Vickers.two speed runs were made from high cruising speed over a distance of about 10 miles.the acceleration of the Spitfire proved superior to that of the Fw 190 and its speed appreciably faster. Owing to adverse weather conditions it was not possible to compare the two aircraft for dive and climb. Manoeuvrability: Brief manoeuvrability tests were carried out and the Spitfire had no difficulty in out-turning the Fw 190. It again should be borne in mind, however, that the pilot of the Fw 190 was reluctant at the time to risk stalling the aircraft in the turn at such a low height and it is therefore possible that the turn could have been tighter and the difference between them less marked.
