On a clear and cold Christmas Eve, 1944, at 22,000ft above Liège, Feldwebel Wilhelm Hopfensitz of 15./JG 3 pulls clear after firing into a B-17G of 838th Bomb Squadron with twin 30mm MK 108 cannon at close range. The torrent of high calibre shells from his Fw 190A-8/R2 WNR. 682305 ‘Yellow 19’ staggered the B-17G and sent it diving out of formation. Moments later Hopfensitz was shot down himself by a gunner firing from another B-17. Painting by Mark Postlethwaite
