Ex­tend­ing the Fw 190’s range, like im­prov­ing its ar­ma­ment, was a con­stant con­cern of Focke-wulf through­out the war years. Ex­per­i­ments were there­fore car­ried out in­volv­ing a stream­lined fuel tank mounted above each wing – where they would not in­ter­fere with weapons load or even ad­di­tional drop tanks.tests were car­ried out in July and Au­gust of 1944 us­ing a Fw 190A-8 and a G-2. A later de­sign had the tanks built into the lead­ing edges of the air­craft’s wings but nei­ther type went into full pro­duc­tion.
