- Stephen Houston

A man aged 37 has been arrested over the killing of pedigree sheep.

We have already revealed how farmer David Morrison was left devasted after 33 pregnant ewes worth £ 50,000 were slain.

The two dogs responsible have now been traced, following an Ayrshire Post story.

Sgt Alan McDowall said: “We are pleased this case has been detected.

“It was particularly unfortunate given the number of sheep that died.”

Top ewe breeder David Morrison, 35, came across the two dogs as they ravaged his Blackfaced flock on a remote hill in the early morning.

One animal lunged at him while the other bared its teeth during the chilling encounter.

They took off like lightning as a neighbour fired his shotgun.

David said: “I am absolutely gobsmacked and devastated. Our ewes have been ripped to shreds. It could not have come at a worse time as they were all heavily pregant and due to give birth to lambs in April.”

The dogs were a grey lurcher and a black and tan Rottweiler- type dog and the pair covered about 600 acres on the hill.

Another 10 are injured - and David fears other lambs will be lost because of the trauma endured by the mothers.

David suspected the owner had been out poaching and came across his 1,550 acre hill farm with 1,100 ewes.

Police say the dogs are still alive and the owner - who is not from the area - has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal at Ayr under dogs and protection of livestock laws.
