Old pals act helps boost charity

Ayrshire Post - - AYRSHIRE PEOPLE -

Two old school pals have turned back the clock to toast 50 years since their classroom capers.

Best buddies Nancy Neil and Catherine Howie first stepped foot in Ayr Academy half a century ago.

Now they’ve raised more than £ 2000 for a good cause to celebrate their surviving friendship.

The duo reunited to hold a bash at the town’s Abbotsford Hotel.

Raffles, auctions and bingo all helped to raise £ 2388 for the South Ayrshire Befriending project.

Nancy, 62, said: “We met on the first day of our secondary education back on August 28, 1967.

“To celebrate the fact we’ve remained friends ever since, we wanted to do something for a good cause.

“We feel that many people have not had the luxury of the support that a close friendship brings and are grateful that we have had that luxury.

“So our nominated charity for the night was the Befriending project who does such good work in the community.

“They make a vast difference to many lives and supporting them was the least we could do.”

A string of businesses backed the night with auction and raffle prizes, while a special caricature of Nancy and Catherine from their school days was also presented.
