Well done in saving woods

Ayrshire Post - - BOB SHIELDS -

Well done to Forehill, Holmston and Masonhill Community Council in their attempt to bring life back to Castlehill Woods.

They want lovers of the woods to speak up. I’M SPEAKING! I’M SPEAKING! Castlehill Woods is where I first wiped out an entire Nazi platoon . . . and took on a tribe of Sioux Indians.

Not a bad morning’s work for a nineyearold in short trousers!

And after a lunch of corned beef sandwiches and diluting orange in our top secret den – w e went big game hunting in the afternoon.

Years later, having left Belmont, I watched in dismay as Masonhill’s newer houses crept deeper and deeper into the trees.

They may have taken the heart out the “old” woods – but not its soul.

There is still enough there worth saving.

I’d be pleased to give the community council any support - by way of a pub event or donating raffle prizes.
