Retailers in an Ayrshire town are being urged to support a small business event when it rolls into their community.

The Small Business Saturday tour bus visited Prestwick to promote the event, which takes place this year on Saturday, December 2.

The town’s retailers – and those across Ayrshire – will be asking the local community and visitors to shop local for all their Christmas gifts.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non- commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘ shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

On Small Business Saturday, customers across the UK are encouraged to go out and support all types of small firms.

Retailers will use the day as a showcase to prove that customers can have a real shopping experience on their doorstep.

A spokeswoman for the event said: “With its unique range of shops, boutiques and restaurants you can combine Christmas shopping with a great day out.

“In the lead up to small business Saturday retailers will post on Facebook their top gifts and give people some great ideas.

“Shopping local also doesn’t mean paying more and the stores hope to show people a great range of gifts starting from just £ 5.

“Town centres are the “heart beat” of the community.

“A great town centre has many benefits including, creating employment, a place to meet, socialise, shop and fully occupied town centres also tend to have lower crime rates.

“In addition they help keep home values higher when it has shown the town centre is well looked after with a great range of local facilities.”

In the last few years the Prestwick Business Association have worked hard to improve their local area with events throughout the year, along with lights and summer street planting.

The PBA has also gained funding from the Scottish Government and South Ayrshire Council to present a proposal to local businesses to become a Business Improvement District, which would be a further boost to keep Prestwick thriving.

A spokesperson for the PBA said: “A Prestwick business is for life not just Christmas.

“We are open for business and ready to take on the larger shopping centres and online world this year.

“This Small Business Saturday make Prestwick your destination you won’t be disappointed and we know the gifts you buy will be the ones people will love.”
