Unfortunately the best performance in an otherwise mediocre Scottish National Orchestra concert at Ayr Town Hall was almost ruined by a careless oversight. Joaquin Achucarro, the young Spanish pianist, won the 1959 Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

As is customary on big occasions, since the restricted stage at Ayr does not permit the piano lid to be fully opened, to remove it completely. This was not done and opening a few inches inadequate. Conductor Alan Suttie seemed blissfully ignorant.
