economy of the west of Scotland by unlocking opportunities to access the large South East of England market and propagate inward investment opportunities that will likely follow the re-establishment of direct flights.

“We know that there is demand for this route and London Heathrow would be an ideal London Airport to partner with.”

Ayr MSP John Scott said major benefits could be on the horizon.

He added: “There are estimates that 16,000 jobs could be supported across Scotland, that landing charges for Scottish flights could be reduced and, most importantly from a local perspective, Prestwick could be used as one of the three ‘logistical hubs’ proposed by Heathrow to transport the material needed for the runway’s construction.

“That could mean vital jobs and investment at Prestwick.

“In order to help press Prestwick’s case, I have put down a question in the Scottish Parliament to ask what discussions have taken place between Ministers and Heathrow with a view to securing Prestwick as one of the three ‘logistical hubs’ and I have also been in touch with the Secretary of State for Scotland to underline Prestwick’s case.

“This is a huge opportunity for us locally and I will be doing everything I can to help make sure that Prestwick gets the maximum benefit from it.”
