Share memories of town cinema
A group bidding to revive Prestwick’s Broadway Cinema are hoping to stir some memories within the town. The small but driven bunch of volunteers insist there is still life in the old girl yet. And their establishment of the Friends of Broadway organisation has sparked hope of a 21st century future. Their plan took another step forward this week with the launch of a fascinating exhibition which archives the famous town landmark. Prestwick library will house the memoirs this summer, with residents and visitors urged to share their own Broadway moments in a special memory box. Group chair, Leica Malkin, revealed: “It’s a great way for people to come together and talk about their memories of what was a very special place in the town. “We have gathered a number of historic pictures and articles relating to the building, so it’s a fascinating look back through history if nothing else.” Friends of the Broadway have an ultimate aim of getting the building, first opened in 1935, re- opened to the public. First they hope that enough momentum will build to support their small venture gain enough financial backing. Leica said: “There’s only four of us just now but we’ll be looking to expand in the near future. “We are pleased with the work we’ve done so far and a couple of grant applications have been successful. “But to take it on we will need extra people involved and exhibitions like this can only help. “There is so much interest within the town when it comes to the Broadway and we know a lot of people would love to see it back in use.”
