Sweet harmonies – and sublime tunes

Bangor Mail - - YOUR GUIDE -

AMERICAN roots trio The Sweet Water Warblers come to Menai Bridge next Wednesday for a show at the Victoria Hotel.

Michigan multi-instrumentalists Rachael Davis, Lindsay Lou and May Erlewine had each carved out successful careers on the American roots circuit before coming together at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in 2014.

As a trio their repertoire swings from gospel and bluegrass to soul and even joyful pop.

With sublime three-part vocal harmonies, they trade instruments including mountain fiddle and banjo, ukulele, guitar and double bass.

Lindsay Lou also doubles as lead vocalist with The Flatbellys, who have toured extensively and appeared at festivals ranging from MerleFest in the USA to Celtic Connections in the UK. Visit lindsayloumusic.com for more details.

She was nominated in the 2016 Best Vocalist category by the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association and was called “the most affectingly expressive singer since Amy Winehouse” by writer Tim Chipping of folk and roots magazine fRoots.

Rachael Davis has a broad and faithful fanbase and has been awarded the Boston Music Award for Best New Singer-Songwriter. Her influences range from jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald to the soulful contemporary vocals of Patty Griffin – and much more in between.

May Erlewine set out on her career as a teenager, hitchhiking across North America playing in small and large towns and busking on the streets – resulting in songs which show a very real connection and concern with the everyday.

Her voice is instantly recognisable, and her material is these days being sung and recorded by many other artists.

Online roots magazine AmericanaUK recently gave the Sweet Water Warblers’ debut EP With You a 9/10 rating, describing it as “Outstanding! Top drawer roots music”.
