Labour leadership race down to top two

Bangor Mail - - NEWS -

WELSH Labour’s leadership race seems increasingly likely to be a straight fight between Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford and Health Secretary Vaughan Gething.

With Carwyn Jones having made it clear that he will not be nominating any candidate to succeed him, and three other would-be contenders having failed so far to secure any support for their own candidacies, there remain just five Labour AMs who remain uncommitted to either of the two front-runners.

Mr Jones announced at the Welsh Labour conference in April that he would be standing down as Welsh Labour leader and First Minister before the end of 2018.

Welsh Labour is holding a special conference on September 15 to make a decision about the voting system to be used, after which the leadership contest will be launched formally.
