Working to keep the streets of Bath safe at night
Bath BID is a welcome new addition to our sponsors for the Bath Business Awards and has also launched its own honours, the Bath BID Awards for its levy payers. This will highlight organisations that are making a difference in five areas - welcome, smart, safe, clean and prosperous. This week they look at safe
Bath is known to be a safe place but it is a working city with urban challenges and a thriving night-time economy. Many organisations and local businesses work hard and collaboratively to keep it secure. The Bath Business Improvement District (known as the Bath BID Company) takes a lead in this area by funding Nightwatch radios for late night venues, pubs and restaurants and providing Bath BID marshals who keep the streets safe and welcoming on weekend evenings. The Bath BID Company is keen to recognise the work of its partners; the city centre businesses who are part of keeping the city streets safe and well managed. The Safe award will be given to a business in the city which makes a significant contribution to the security of the night time environment for workers, visitors and residents. There are loads of great examples of people working together to share great ideas and support each other to make it work better. One recent example came about in response to the concerns of a worried parent who wanted to ensure pubs and clubs in the area were able to understand the behaviour of people with autism. The Bath Bid Nightwatch team ran a training session for city centre night-time businesses. The meeting was well attended by city marshals, the CCTV team, bar and club managers. The audience learnt how to recognise behaviour associated with autism, and how best to respond in those situations within the night-time economy. After the talk, information was passed onto staff who come into contact with the public, particularly door staff. Jenny Adams, Nightwatch Ranger for Bath BID Company said: “We have received positive feedback on the talk and organisations have been implementing what was learned. It’s great to have a better understanding about customers’ potential needs and how we can help them.” Does your favourite pub, club or restaurant in the city of Bath do something special that helps people stay safe at night? If so, nominate it for a Bath BID Award. All Bath BID business members can nominate themselves. Winners will be announced at the Bath BID AGM on October 2 at the Hilton. The overall winner, the Bath BID Business Awards Champion, will be announced at the Bath Chronicle Business Awards in November. To nominate go to www.bathbid.co.uk/the-bath-bidawards.
