Establish park and rides before zone

Bath Chronicle - - OPINION -

We have only one month to have our say on the clean air zone, then less than one month for BANES to listen or ignore our comments. Certainly not enough time for such an important and forever plan to be decided. That this is even being considered before establishing park and ride at Batheaston, and say Claverton is appalling. The existing park and rides at Odd Down, Newbridge, Lansdown, are proven ways to reduce traffic and therefore pollution in and out of Bath. It is outrageous that motorists like me who were encouraged by Gordon Brown and those tax policies to buy diesel vehicles in good faith, should now be punished for doing so, and the subsequent coalition did nothing to correct it. To charge diesel vehicles as recent as pre 2015 is ruthless. The proposed charging zone is too large. It would make it impossible to travel north/south and west/ east without going through the charging zone. BANES are clearly therefore perceived to be treating this as a money-making exercise. The basic premiss of charging/ punishing such vehicles as curative, is false. Charging vehicles who have to go through the zone because there is no alternative route, to go from A to B, does not stop/reduce pollution. Conclusion: The scheme as it stands should be shelved. Establish park and rides at Bathampton and Claverton, then review the need for a clean air zone. Dr Paul Veale Bath
