Passengers will see ‘simplified fare zones’ from Sunday with the introduction of changes to bus ticket prices. Operator First West of England says the changes will offer “more incentives for customers” to save by buying tickets before they board the bus. Smartcard fares and mtickets are largely unchanged but there are increases for on-the-bus payments. For the first time, customers who travel infrequently can buy one single ticket on the mticket app, with a saving against the onbus price, allowing more customers to switch to mobile ticketing without having to pay for multiple journeys upfront. The operator is also changing the way in which Smartcards can be topped up to speed up boarding and overall travel times. The Smartcard can be topped up at Payzone stores across the city but will no longer be able to top them up on the bus. First West of England managing director James Freeman said: “We continue to see significant growth in the number of people using our buses in Bath and the surrounding areas, and these new fares will ensure we can continue to make the investment in our people and fleet that is necessary to meet this rising demand. “Speeding up journeys is more critical now than ever, so our new fares provide a further incentive for even more customers to buy before they board, which will help further speed up the boarding process and keep our buses moving. “We are also delighted that customers currently travelling in our West of England Zone will see significant reductions when buying day and longer duration tickets.” The key changes are: Adult day tickets cut by £1 bought before boarding the bus Adult weekly tickets will reduce by £3; monthly tickets by £16 and annual tickets by £210 if bought before boarding The 3-stop hop ticket will increase to £1.20, the first change since 2013 The Bath Inner Zone will be renamed the Bath Zone with no changes to single, month or year ticket prices The Bath & Bristol Outer Zone is ceasing with the introduction of the Bath Zone, a Bristol Zone and a Weston-super-mare Zone. For anything else passengers will need a West of England Zone ticket Customers buying Bath & Bristol Outer Zone tickets before November 11, valid for travel after that date will be able to use them for the whole West of England Zone. Prices for the university bus services are unchanged as they were set at the start of the academic year. For full details of all changes go to
