Organ Music from Westminster Abbey

JS Bach, Mozart, Walton, Widor etc

Eloquence 482 4933 (1963-5) 95:24 mins

The Australian label Eloquence does Simon Preston’s 80th birthday proud with a clutch of re-releases charting the Argo recordings. The Abbey yields meticulous Mozart, skilfully-registered Wagner, and an unshowy, crystal-clear Widor Toccata. ★★★★ 20th-century Organ Music

Elgar, Davies, Hindemith, Howells, etc Eloquence 482 4925 (1967) 120:10 mins

Preston could have been born to play the three Hindemith Sonatas that preface Maxwell Davies’s austere Fantasia on O Magnum Mysterium. A magisterial Elgar Sonata adds full-on Romanticism to the mix. ★★★★

Romantic Organ Music

Brahms, Franck, Liszt, Reger & Reubke Eloquence 482 4941 (1963-67) 139:07 mins

A riveting account of Liszt’s Ad Nos Fantasia caps the snarling majesty of Reubke’s Sonata, both offset by Preston’s sweetly-perfumed Franck Prélude and four of Brahms’s valedictory chorale preludes. ★★★★★ Variations on America

Works by Sousa, Ives, Guilmant, Bossi etc Eloquence 482 8101 (1988) 66:32 mins

Pizzazz might not be a quality instantly associated with Preston, but he breezes through The Stars and Stripes and Danse Macabre with a showmanship worthy of Barnum and Bailey. ★★★★★
