Three to look out for…

-

Nora Fischer Soprano

Born: London, UK

Career highlight: My highlights have included working with Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen and the LA Philharmonic, plus incredible jazz musicians and the experimental theatre group Schweigman&, with whom I created a performance piece in a forest. Musical hero: The mezzo Cathy Berberian was a great singer and one of the first to push the boundaries of the classical vocal practice. Dream concert: Many concerts I have already given feel like dream concerts! As I work in a field of music that is not always seen as being the most accessible, it is extra rewarding when I find ways of opening up people’s minds to a new type of music.

Moonkyung Lee Violinist

Born: Seoul, Korea

Career highlight: Working with the London Symphony Orchestra on my debut album. I still remember the excitement going into the first session; I was soon mesmerised by their refined sound and musicality.

Musical hero: When, at 93, cellist Pablo Casals was asked why he still continued to practise for three hours a day, he replied that he noticed himself getting better at it. I truly admire his incessant passion for music. Dream concert: I’ve recently formed a group with my dear friends who attended Yale School of Music with me. I’m incredibly excited about the concerts we have lined up.

Ryan Bancroft Conductor

Born: Los Angeles, US

Career highlight: Winning first prize and the Audience Prize at the 2018 Malko Competition in Copenhagen. And conducting JS Bach with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century was also incredible. Musical hero: Nina Simone, who combined her training as a classical pianist with her intelligence and presence as an Africanamerican in the 1960s and ’70s to create meaningful and politically relevant music. Dream concert: Watching Claudio Abbado conduct Janá ek’s The Cunning Little Vixen.

I don’t think he ever performed it, but I imagine it would have been one of the most magical occurrences. I’d also love to conduct anything by Boulez anywhere in the world to an audience with ears and hearts open.
