Czech violinist and academic Milan Škampa (born 1928) played with the famed Smetana String Quartet from 1956 until the ensemble’s disbandment in 1989. A professor at the Prague Academy of Music, kampa was honoured in 2016 with the International Viola Society’s highest award, The Silver Alto Clef.
Composer and guitarist Glenn Branca (born 1948) was an important figure on the US avant garde scene. Much of his music was written for electric guitar, including his 2016 Symphony No. 16 (Orgasm), scored for 100 guitars and drums, though he did also compose for traditional symphony orchestras and smaller chamber ensembles. His works have been widely recorded.
