Michael Thorn, Helston
Having grown up as a cello student with the Du Pré recording of Elgar’s Cello Concerto, I have always been disappointed with live performances. But at St George’s, Bristol in May the interpretation by Sheku Kannehmason with the English Symphony Orchestra was spellbinding: an intimate and reflective reading played in close communion with the orchestra. This was something very different and very special: the audience hardly dared breathe.
