BBC Music Magazine - - Letters -

When I tuned into this year’s ‘Ten Pieces’ Prom, the opening music was Finlandia. The audience was given a background on Sibelius and how his famous work came to be composed. When the performance began, I was in disbelief when the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Payare reached the great hymn. The woodwind section was dropped completely as the strings took up the noble theme. The effect on me was cataclysmic. Why was the music truncated in this way? Peter Frankland, Bury
