The ver­te­brate voice box, or lar­ynx, is con­structed from car­ti­lage that was used in our fish an­ces­tors to sup­port the gills. Th­ese ‘gill arches’ have also been re-de­ployed in the de­vel­op­ment of the ear and lower jaw.
