8 SIN­GLE NEST MOUND

Mon­odomy is when an ant colony (all the queens, all the brood and most of the work­ers) is housed in a sin­gle nest mound. It is fed by many for­ag­ing trails. This type of colony can have one or sev­eral queens.

9 MUL­TI­PLE NEST MOUNDS

Poly­domy is when an ant colony buds to set up new nest mounds. Ini­tially, the ‘daugh­ter’ mounds lack for­ag­ing trails, re­ly­ing on re­sources from the main mound; they may or may not have their own queens.
