Vanishing vaquitas

Why are we losing the vaquita for the sake of the totoaba swimbladder (Agenda, December 2017)? For many years in human history, China had no knowledge of Mexico’s existence, let alone that of the totoaba. Therefore this belief, that its swimbladder is some benefit to our health, must be made up. Just about every chordate and many invertebrates also have swimbladders, albeit not a double one.
