Hughes Mush­rooms plans new pro­duc­tion fa­cil­ity as part of on­go­ing multi-mil­lion pound ex­pan­sion

A CO TY­RONE mush­room busi­ness is con­tin­u­ing its ex­pan­sion amid plans for a new pro­duc­tion fa­cil­ity at its Dun­gan­non base.

As part of this multi-mil­lion in­vest­ment, Hughes Mush­rooms has also an­nounced the ex­pan­sion of its head of­fice pro­duc­tion fa­cil­ity in Dun­gan­non.

“This in­vest­ment will fo­cus on a new stand-alone high care fa­cil­ity, which will sup­port the cur­rent pre­pared pro­duce fac­tory built in 2015,” it said.

It comes af­ter it was re­vealed the firm is build­ing a new £4m site in England as it con­tin­ues to grow. Hughes Mush­rooms is now tak­ing on an 11-acre site at Gar­rick Farm near How­den in East York­shire.

The com­pany was orig­i­nally founded in 1964.

It cur­rently sup­plies the UK mar­ket with over 240 tonnes of mush­rooms each week.

The lat­est ex­pan­sion will cre­ate around 70 jobs, with a fur­ther 30 to come by the end of the year.

Em­met Hughes, busi­ness de­vel­op­ment di­rec­tor, said: “The world-class fa­cil­ity we’re cre­at­ing in east York­shire is un­ri­valled in Europe in terms of its ef­fi­ciency and en­vi­ron­men­tally-friendly cre­den­tials.

“It has been de­vel­oped af­ter ex­ten­sive re­search with some of the world’s most suc­cess­ful pro­duc­ers to meet the de­mands and chal­lenges of the mod­ern in­dus­try”.

And Kieran Hughes, man­ag­ing di­rec­tor, said: “There is no doubt that peo­ple are eat­ing more fresh pro­duce in their di­ets and mush­rooms are a key part of this.

“Our in­vest­ment in this new fa­cil­ity at Dun­gan­non is a com­mit­ment to th­ese trends and will put us at the fore­front of th­ese ex­cit­ing new de­vel­op­ments in the mar­ket.

“By adding value to our core mush­room busi­ness, we will strengthen our re­la­tion­ship with key cus­tomers and get us closer to con­sumers.

“This will help pro­tect the jobs of our di­rect em­ploy­ees and our mush­room grow­ers who have been at the heart of our busi­ness over many years.”

Hughes Mush­rooms has seen its turnover dou­ble in the last few years, reach­ing around £30m in 2015.

The com­pany works with a net­work of over 25 grow­ers across North­ern Ire­land.

It sup­plies a range of white and chest­nut mush­rooms.

Two years ago it an­nounced a new list­ing with Tesco for its stuffed range. And that same year, it also picked up an award in the Waitrose Way Awards 2015 at the House of Lords in Lon­don.

It was sin­gled out for its work to im­prove the sus­tain­abil­ity of the busi­ness.
