New lease of life for belfast bar under incoming tenants
POPULAR Belfast pub Aether & Echo is to reopen next month as The Berliner following a £100,000 refurbishment.
The venue has gained new leaseholders Conor Quinn and Paddy Duff, who worked in the Linen House entertainment complex housing Rita’s, Sweet Afton, The Perch and Chinawhite.
They’re taking over the former Deer’s Head venue, and will be leasing the bar from landlords Jar (IRE) Ltd. Mr Quinn said plans for a refit at the Lower Gar- field Street bar will be “pretty extensive”.
“It will be done in phases, beginning with a refit downstairs. There are two other parts of the building which we will work on afterwards,” he said.
“We are hoping to re-brand the whole building but keep it traditional in the sense that it will serve food and show sports, but become a more comfortable bar.”
The Berliner will create 30 new jobs — and Mr Quinn said 15 of those jobs will be up for grabs during the first phase of work.
At present it is advertising for various posts while all of the staff from Aether & Echo will be kept on. Mr Quinn is hoping The Berliner — which is inspired by the newspaper format of the same name — can capitalise on the footfall generated by neighbouring projects. “We really hope to establish ourselves in the next few years and benefit from the developments in the area including the Royal Exchange and student residences,” he said.
