Belfast Telegraph - Business Telegraph - - News - BY MARGARET CANNING

LOGISTICS firm Derry Refrigerated Transport has announced a £9m investment in a new facility in Co Armagh, with the creation of 50 new jobs.

And the Portadown firm also announced the acquisition of Brennan Refrigerated Transport in Waterford, adding five lorries to its existing fleet of 60.

It’s opening up the new site in Portadown at Charlestown Road, where it has 200 employees.

The company will be relocating from its current premises on Vicarage Road, Portadown, but has said it will keep the original premises.

Managing director Patrick Der- ry said Brexit was not the sole reason for the expansion.

“Brexit was not a main reason in my decision making.

“This investment is what is needed in our industry in the 21st century. However it will, of course, future-proof the company going forward regardless of the decision being made about a hard or soft border.

“At this stage, it is hard to gauge the exact detail of how Brexit will affect our business.

“There is still so much uncer- tainty on a way forward. However, this new facility will ensure my customer base will have tailor-made solutions to fit their plans going forward.”

He added: “It is a very exciting time at Derry Refrigerated Transport.

“This investment will allow us to build on the platform we have established during our 20 years in the industry and will enable us to provide wider and more tailored services to our clients.

“We are delighted to be able to create employment for the local area once our new hub is complete and we are looking forward to expanding further into the Irish market.

“Our customers have been extremely loyal to us since starting out 20 years ago with only one lorry and we want to continue to enhance our relationship by offering them something extra.

“We are hopeful that this recent investment will establish Derry as the go-to refrigerated transport company in Ireland.”

Meanwhile, an Antrim distribution company has snapped up a small Irish food firm specialising in beans, according to reports.

The Sunday Times reported that PRM Group has acquired Cool Beans, which was set up by Isolde Moylan and Sarah O’connor — both employees of business advisory firm EY — in 2013.

PRM Group also owns food brands Fresh Food Kitchen and Galberts.

It’s owned by Philip and Lynne Morrow and specialises in the distribution of frozen and chilled foods.

This will allow us to build on the platform we have established during 20 years in the industry
