Mat alan to open new store in castle court
FASHION and homeware retail giant Matalan is opening a new store in Belfast city centre.
The UK retailer is set to become a new anchor tenant in the Castlecourt shopping centre next month, creating more than 50 jobs in a new 24,000 sq ft unit. Matalan will take over the firstfloor unit left vacant after Toys R Us entered administration in April.
It represents the retailer’s first city centre store on the island of Ireland and brings to six the number of outlets in Northern Ireland. A spokesperson for the company said: “We’re really delighted to be investing in Castlecourt and in Belfast city centre and look forward to bringing our quality clothing and homeware brand, outstanding customer care and click and collect service to shoppers from across the city and further afield.”
A Matalan spokesman said it is starting the fit-out in the new unit, which will open during October.
“This is a landmark Matalan store in an outstanding location and we’re excited by the opportunities that this new store will bring,” he said.
Despite the closure of Royal Avenue in the wake of the Primark fire, the announcement represents another positive boost for CastleCourt. DV8, which is one of the 14 retailers caught inside the Primark cordon, has just relocated to the shopping centre.
Irish coffee chain Insomnia also recently opened its first city centre outlet on the ground floor.
Michael Wright, the director of asset management at Castlecourt’s owner Wirefox, said: “Matalan’s decision to open a substantial new store in Castlecourt demonstrates the centre’s appeal and investment potential.
“This is another major milestone for Castlecourt in our mission to continually innovate, expand our retail mix to meet growing customer demand and to create unrivalled customer experiences that drive investment and opportunity for the centre and for the city.”
Matalan was represented in the transaction by Colin Mathewson of agents CBRE.
Wirefox/castlecourt were represented by Paul Wilson, retail director at Savills Belfast.
“We are excited that Matalan has chosen Belfast and the secondary anchor store within Castlecourt to launch its latest format,” Mr Wilson added.
