Smithfield car park plan submitted
A BID to transform a car park at Belfast’s Smithfield Market into a multi-million pound office and retail development has moved forward.
An outline planning application has been submitted by Bywater Properties and Ashmour for the 1.25 acre site between Gresham Street and Winetavern Street, close to Royal Avenue.
The Building Blocks project, which the applicants claim could create up to 650 construction jobs, includes the refurbishment of the listed Butcher’s Building.
Bywater and Ashmour said around 200 people fed into a public consultation on their plan.
The bid would see around half the 235,000sq ft floor space being created dedicated for office use, accommodating around 1,500 people.
The remainder will be a combination of workshop, retail and co-working space.
Theo Michell from Bywater said: “We were pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response to the illustrative vision we set out through the consultation process.
“We set out a strong set of core guiding principles for the scheme and we were encouraged by the feedback from the community to our plans.
“We have taken on board the views expressed and now look forward to engaging with the city planners to move the project on to the next phase.”
