MOTABILITY is the UK’S leading car scheme for disabled people. In Northern Ireland alone, approximately 32,000 people avail of the scheme that offers motorists with disabilities the opportunity and financial support to own or lease a car.

Powered wheelchairs and scooters can also be financed through the scheme.

As a unique and successful collaboration of the public and private sectors, the initiative also supports those caring for a disabled child aged three or over, and those who do not drive can still apply for a car as a passenger and nominate two other people as their drivers.

Cars are supplied through a network of local Motability Dealer Partners and many of the vehicles are available simply by customers transferring their allowance to Motability for the period of the agreement.

For most Motability customers, a standard production car is suitable for their needs but, as part of the contract hire package, around 400 adaptations are available, with many popular adaptations — such as push-pull hand controls and left-foot accelerators — offered at no additional cost.

The most popular option for Motability customers is the contract hire of a new car, which offers worry-free motoring at affordable prices.

Customers can choose a brand new car from a selection of over 2,000 models, from the major manufacturers, on a three or fiveyear lease.

Insurance, road tax, breakdown cover, servicing, tyre and windscreen replacement are all included in a single monthly payment.

A simple online Car Search tool at www.motabil makes it easy to find and create a shortlist of cars that suit individual lifestyle and accessibility requirements and budgets.

Anyone receiving higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment, Armed Forces Independence Payment or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supple- ment can apply for the scheme.

The choice of vehicles includes over 500 automatic models, more than 1,000 eco-friendly choices, including the first 100% electric vehicle available to lease through Motability, and around 450 cars with no Advance Payment. A wide range of affordable Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles ( WAVS) are also available.

Whilst many people are aware of Motability and its new car scheme, it’s probably true that fewer know about its Vehicle Conversions scheme.

It’s a very tricky — and legally sensitive — job to convert vehicles to the needs of disabled users, and only specialist workshops are permitted to do so.

In Northern Ireland, only relatively few companies have the experience needed to take existing vehicles and adapt them to be genuinely useful and safe for disabled customers.

Special mirrors, anchorings for wheelchairs, lowered floors, powered ramps — all of these and more are available. The Motability website includes a list of the best adaptions and WAVS for customers.

There are many different vehicles on the Scheme, and also adaptations available to improve your driving or travelling experience.

The website has lists and descriptions of what is available, and a special Car Search function makes it simpler to choose from 2,000 different models and their adaptations.

But it’s critically important to use accredited firms to convert or purchase from. Check out www. motabil for full details.
