A CO Londonderry woman who was alleged to have spat at a doctor in Altnagelvin Hospital has had her bail revoked and been remanded in custody.

Elizabeth Flanagan (34), of Abercorn Road in the city, appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with breaching her bail, assaulting the doctor and possessing cannabis on November 13.

A police officer connected Flanagan to the charges and opposed bail due to the risk of re-offending.

The court heard Flanagan had approached a doctor in A&E and asked when she would be seen.

When she was told in due course, Flanagan was said to have started shouting abuse at the doctor and, despite being asked to calm down, continued shouting and spat at him.

Police were called at around 9pm and Flanagan was arrested.

The court was told officers also found a small block of cannabis on her person.

A defence solicitor said that while this was Flanagan’s third breach of bail, the other two transgressions were relatively minor.

He added his client was “embarrassed and ashamed” of her behaviour in the hospital.

District Judge Barney McElholm described the incident as “disgusting”.

He revoked her bail and remanded her in custody, adding he wanted the message to go out that people could not treat medical staff in this manner.

Flanagan then shouted at the judge before being led away to the cells. She will appear again on December 7.
