Sotheby’s claims Banksy stunt ‘a coup on art world’

Cut up: Banksy’s work is shred­ded AN auc­tion house has called a prank by the se­cre­tive street artist Banksy which par­tially shred a £1m paint­ing im­me­di­ately af­ter it was sold at auc­tion a “coup on the art world”.

The anony­mous artist’s Girl With Bal­loon was bought for £1.04m at a Sotheby’s sale on Oc­to­ber 5.

But al­most as soon as the ham­mer fell, the can­vas was passed through a se­cret shred­der hid­den in the frame, leav­ing the bot­tom half in tat­ters and only a soli­tary red bal­loon left on a white back­ground in the frame.

Sotheby’s Alex Branczik said: “When I saw the pic­ture had dropped I thought ‘oh no’, but when I re­alised it was a Banksy in­ter­ven­tion I think I laughed.”
