Pool come up short in record bid

- BY GRAHAM LUNEY

CARELESS Liverpool threw away the chance to smash Manchester City’s Premier League points record with a 2-1 loss at Arsenal.

Three wins from their last three matches would have left Jurgen Klopp’s champions on 102 points, surpassing City’s 100 tally from 2018 but now the Merseyside giants are stuck on 93 points with just two games left.

Arsenal’s first victory over Liverpool in five years keeps their Europa League hopes alive.

Sadio Mane fired Liverpool in front but the home side equalised when Alexandre Lacazette took advantage of a rare error from Virgil Van Dijk. A misplaced pass from goalkeeper Alisson then gave Reiss Nelson the chance to power Arsenal in front at the break.

In the earlier games, Tottenham beat Newcastle 3-1 and Manchester City overcame Bournemouth 2-1 while Burnley and Wolves finished 1-1.
