The original WAG who walked away

Lizzie Cundy was one of the original WAGs, married to footballer-turned-sports pundit Jason Cundy. The pair got together in 1994 but separated in 2010, and divorced in December 2012 amid rumours of the former Chelsea player’s infidelity. The glamorous 47-year-old told best she thinks the tide is turning. ‘ WAGs are fighting back. It’s a sign of the times that they aren’t going to take it any more. ‘Before, particularly when players got into trouble, the wives stood by them and turned a blind eye, but they have found their voice and are talking with their feet, because they are walking away.’ She added, ‘There has always been this idea that WAGs are more interested in keeping the lifestyle than anything else. They aren’t living empty, shallow lives. The WAGs I know are very savvy. They aren’t mindless bimbos.’

Speaking of her own marriage, the mum-of-two explained, ‘I strongly believe if you can save your marriage, you should try to – especially when there are children involved. But if, for instance, your partner is repeatedly getting caught cheating, then it shouldn’t be tolerated.

‘Look at Coleen – stepping out without her ring on is a sign to Wayne. It’s a statement. She’s showing her strength… that it can’t be tolerated. WAGs deserve more respect. Footballers are role models and they need to show respect to women, to their partners. The days of writing it off as “being a lad” have gone.’

Wise words, Lizzie.
