Pioppi in south­ern Italy is known for its su­per-healthy pop­u­la­tion, with many of the peo­ple who live there cel­e­brat­ing their 100th birth­day. Ex­perts be­lieve that their diet is the se­cret weapon in winning the war on age and stay­ing health­ier – and slim­mer – for longer.

As well as Mediter­ranean fruit and veg, in­clud­ing pep­pers, vine-ripened toma­toes and wa­ter­melon, the peo­ple of Pioppi eat oily fish, eggs, dark choco­late and wine, all of which have been proven to help main­tain a healthy heart.

Eggs and fish are also a great source of pro­tein, and Liam Ma­honey, nu­tri­tion­ist at pro­tein prod­uct com­pany Grenade, thinks this is also im­por­tant, as many slim­mers switch to low-calo­rie foods that have lit­tle or no en­ergy-boost­ing pro­tein. He says, ‘Pro­tein con­tains the same kind of amino acids as glu­cose, but they’re pro­cessed slowly so you feel fuller for longer, which pre­vents crav­ings.’

Be­gin­ning the day with a ta­ble­spoon of ap­ple cider vine­gar is also thought to help lower blood pres­sure and boost weight loss.
