Pioppi in southern Italy is known for its super-healthy population, with many of the people who live there celebrating their 100th birthday. Experts believe that their diet is the secret weapon in winning the war on age and staying healthier – and slimmer – for longer.
As well as Mediterranean fruit and veg, including peppers, vine-ripened tomatoes and watermelon, the people of Pioppi eat oily fish, eggs, dark chocolate and wine, all of which have been proven to help maintain a healthy heart.
Eggs and fish are also a great source of protein, and Liam Mahoney, nutritionist at protein product company Grenade, thinks this is also important, as many slimmers switch to low-calorie foods that have little or no energy-boosting protein. He says, ‘Protein contains the same kind of amino acids as glucose, but they’re processed slowly so you feel fuller for longer, which prevents cravings.’
Beginning the day with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar is also thought to help lower blood pressure and boost weight loss.
