Not such a tough adventure bike

Twenty years ago a mate I rode with was a big Ducati fan and we used to rib him about their lack of reliability. Now I have a BMW R1200GS LC. Bought it when it was 21 months old. Less than two months later I found the front wheel was dented. Could not confirm whether it was like that when I bought it, or I had done it. After all, up and down the M90 in February is a demanding environment for an adventure bike. Came to a deal with BMW and paid £220 to have it replaced – the list price is £800 I think. Less than a year later the entire exhaust was replaced. Under warranty. It seems a valve seizes and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire exhaust. Last week it went in for a service and a recall for the fork. Now, at 17,000 miles and a little over four years old the rear shock has failed. Not a one-off apparently. So an adventure bike? I don’t think so. Calum, if you are reading this try not to laugh too much. Mitchell Ellis, email
