Capercaillie-watching at ‘Heatherlea’s Private Estate’

In June, male Capercaillie begin to moult, and female birds, perhaps with chicks, may be seen. Heatherlea have access to a local private estate, deep in the heartland for ‘The Big Grouse’. Staying inside ‘mobile hide’ minibuses is a big advantage: we approach birds without scaring them, and usually the bird is enjoyed by everyone in the bus, rather than by one or two people at the front of a group on foot, when birds are more likely to take flight. In summer, birds are generally seen on the ground, and sometimes stand to attention, or slowly walk into the forest. We pay special note to areas recently cleared of trees, where Capercaillie often come to feed. Sightings are certainly not guaranteed, and we won’t disturb the birds just to see them, but Heatherlea has a good reputation for finding the birds – so you really can see Capercaillie!

We will search for Capercaillie (female top right, male bottom right) – photos taken on Heatherlea’s private estate
