DARK-EDGED BEE-FLY

On sunny days, the first but­ter­flies may take to the air. So, too, the odd bum­ble­bee. But my favourite March in­sect is the re­mark­able Dark-edged Bee-fly. Re­sem­bling bee and fly, th­ese fluffy bun­dles hover in­quis­i­tively above flow­ers (or even check out hu­man ad­mir­ers), their long, tongue-like pro­boscis point­ing the way to­wards nec­tar.
