This is a monster of a book for bird of prey lovers, with 1,100 pictures of raptors in flight. Sixty species are covered, and most of the pictures are close-up in blue skies. That might not be how you’d see them here in the UK, but with more and more species making it across the English Channel, you never know what will turn up next. A full range of plumages is covered, from juvenile through to adult, as well as the many ‘morphs’ of species such as Buzzard or Booted Eagle. Some pictures even have the word ‘probable’ against them, showing how difficult a subject this is, and giving all of us an excuse for making mistakes! Dick Forsman shows his great authority on this subject in the detailed text, and a small quibble is that I would have loved to see more pictures of the mixed birds, often on migration, which I have observed in many parts of Europe and the Middle East. With my window facing out into raptor country, though, I’m sure the book will never make it into the bookcase, but will be on the windowsill ready for action! John Miles
