Bird Watching (UK) - - 30 Years Of Birdwatching -

Having returned to breed courtesy of East Anglian coastal defences of World War II, Avocets have spread from their original Suffolk stronghold. By the launch of Bird Watching in 1986, they were already well established and a decade later there were more than 650 UK breeding pairs. Some 20 years on and the numbers have more than doubled with 1,500 breeding pairs, from Yorkshire to the south coast, and more than 7,500 now wintering in the country.
