Back in 1986, field guides were still de­scrib­ing this dash­ing hunter as a rare breeder found only on the heath­land of south­ern Eng­land. Th­ese days, the 2,800 breed­ing pairs have spread much fur­ther north, and tend to be tied more strongly to watery habi­tats such as gravel pits, where their dragon­fly prey can be found.
