This of­ten-over­looked species reached a low point in 1986, with only 241 breed­ing pairs in the UK, but there are more than 3,000 now – clear­felled ar­eas on forestry plan­ta­tions have played a part, and they also like heath­land, but farm­ing ‘set aside’ land also pro­vided habi­tat un­til 2008. How Wood Larks fare now that is no longer avail­able is an in­trigu­ing ques­tion.
