This is a species which has ac­tu­ally in­creased in num­bers since the late 19th Cen­tury, but what’s changed in the last 30 years has been its will­ing­ness to visit gar­dens, and par­tic­u­larly gar­den feed­ers, mak­ing it much more fa­mil­iar than pre­vi­ously. Its range has spread north, too, and in re­cent years there have been in­creas­ing num­bers of records in Ire­land – in the past, the ac­cepted wis­dom was that wood­peck­ers don’t cross size­able stretches of wa­ter.
