Num­bers have in­creased, from 210,000 ter­ri­to­ries (1988-91) to as many as 340,000 now, and their range has spread north. Gar­den feed­ing may have played a part, but gen­er­ally milder win­ters is prob­a­bly the ma­jor rea­son for this change – th­ese tiny birds are vul­ner­a­ble to ex­treme cold.
