WHAT IS THE UK RED LIST? More prop­erly known as Birds of Con­ser­va­tion Con­cern, it’s a list­ing of those species con­sid­ered Threat­ened in the UK, Chan­nel Is­lands and Isle of Man. As­sess­ment is based on the most up-to-date ev­i­dence avail­able. Cri­te­ria in­clude con­ser­va­tion sta­tus at global and Euro­pean lev­els and, within the UK: his­tor­i­cal de­cline, trends in pop­u­la­tion and range, rar­ity, lo­calised dis­tri­bu­tion and in­ter­na­tional im­por­tance. Nine­teen species were red-listed for the first time in De­cem­ber 2015 due to wors­en­ing pop­u­la­tion sta­tus, and one (Mer­lin) was re­turned to the Red List.
