TURTLE DOVE

Bird Watching (UK) - - Contents -

Many people think that Turtle Doves get their odd name from the ‘scaly’ pattern on the wings, somewhat resembling the pattern of a turtle or tortoise shell. However, the name is said to derive from the song of the dove, the soft purring ‘turr turrr’ which is such a sadly missed sound of modern summers across much of the country.
