Look at this Mallorcan beauty!
I would be most grateful if you could confirm the ID of the bird shown. We believe this is a Little Bittern. This bird showed well at less than four metres distance in the Albufera Nature reserve in Mallorca on 12 May. The bird ignored a significant number of people viewing and photographing it. It simply went on fishing! She appeared to be about Moorhen size. Robert Mclaughlin
QThis is indeed a gorgeous example of a female Little Bittern. Usually quite a secretive bird, they do very rarely visit the UK, and have bred here on a couple of occasions. But you are far more likely to see them in Mallorca! We’re speculating that this one has become a bit more tolerant of humans owing to the number of visitors at the Albufera Reserve, which is one of the premier birdwatching spots on the island, and well worth a visit.
