Call for help after eagle disappearance
RSPB Scotland has issued an appeal for information after the disappearance of yet another young Golden Eagle in the Inverness area. The satellite tagged female vanished in early July, in the northern Monadhliath mountains, to the south-east of the Scottish city, and is the eighth such bird to mysteriously vanish in five years. A tagged male Hen Harrier also disappeared in a similar manner from the same region in mid August, adding to the tally of raptors that have met the same fate in the area. In every case, data received from the tags showed the tags to be working perfectly just before they suddenly ceased transmitting. Several of the birds were later found to have been illegally killed. RSPB Scotland say that they do not think it coincidental that the majority of ‘disappearing’ tagged raptors have vanished over intensively managed game bird areas.
