Although our breed­ing birds start fly­ing south in July, an au­tumn sea­watch, es­pe­cially on western coasts, should still turn up plenty of these small shear­wa­ters, glid­ing over the waves on long, straight wings. Very oc­ca­sion­ally blown in­land by storms, too, although such birds of­ten strug­gle to sur­vive.
